Kampala, Uganda – Uganda and Ukraine have taken a significant step toward strengthening bilateral relations following the inauguration of Ukraine’s Honorary Consulate in Kampala. The ceremony, officiated by the Minister for the Presidency, Hon. Milly Babalanda, was held at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel and brought together diplomats, government officials, and business leaders from both countries.
In her remarks, Hon. Babalanda described Uganda–Ukraine relations as being “anchored on the principles of sovereign equality, mutual respect, and adherence to international law.” She emphasised the growing economic and commercial opportunities between the two nations, particularly in agriculture and industrial development.
The Minister noted that Ukraine’s global leadership in large-scale agriculture, grain production, farm mechanisation, irrigation systems, and agro-processing aligns strongly with Uganda’s national priorities of agricultural modernization and value addition. She added that Uganda’s expanding industrial parks, as well as opportunities in pharmaceuticals and light manufacturing, present further avenues for mutually beneficial investment and technology transfer. Hon. Babalanda also reiterated Uganda’s call for an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine, expressing concern over its humanitarian and global economic impact. She stressed that Uganda supports all international efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability.
Ukraine’s Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Yurii Tokar, attended the event and spoke about Ukraine’s resilience amid current challenges. He noted that despite the ongoing conflict, Ukraine continues to function institutionally and economically while sustaining active diplomacy and expanding international partnerships. The newly appointed Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Uganda, Mr. Jay Patel, highlighted the shared growth vision between the two countries. He underscored opportunities in agricultural value addition, technology exchange, and trade expansion. He pointed to prospects such as Ukrainian agricultural machinery supporting Ugandan farmers to increase yields, alongside the introduction of premium Ugandan products like coffee and tea to Ukrainian markets.
The Consulate will prioritise the promotion of trade, investment, and industrial partnerships, with a strong focus on agriculture. Stakeholders were encouraged to utilise the consulate as a platform for organising business delegations, accessing market intelligence, and facilitating commercial linkages. Among the dignitaries present were Hon. David Bahati, Minister of State for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives (Industry), while Hon. Jeje Odong, Minister of Foreign Affairs, was recognised in absentia.
The Honorary Consulate in Kampala will operate in support of the Embassy of Ukraine in Nairobi, which retains primary diplomatic and consular accreditation to Uganda. The inauguration marks a new chapter in Uganda–Ukraine relations, signaling expanded cooperation in trade, investment, and economic development.
