Kampala, Uganda – On 4th December 2025, the Ministry of Health, through its Human Resources Development Department and with investment from the United States Government, officially launched the Uganda Suprahub at the Ministry of Health offices in Kampala. The initiative is aimed at strengthening how health workers across the country learn, train, and receive expert guidance through innovative digital platforms.

Over the past five years, the Ministry of Health has steadily enhanced health worker training using tele-mentoring, a virtual, case-based learning approach that connects frontline health workers with national and regional experts. This model enables continuous professional development while ensuring that quality healthcare knowledge reaches even the most remote facilities.

Currently, Uganda’s tele-mentoring network connects 425 health facilities and 17 Regional Referral Hospital hubs across the country. In addition, six national hubs have been established within key institutions and programs, including the AIDS Control Program, Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital, the School of Public Health, and the Pharmacy Department. Professional councils have also adopted the platform to support continuous learning and professional development among their members.

Speaking at the launch, the Director General of Health Services, Dr. Olaro Charles, emphasized the impact of virtual engagement on service integration. He noted that through weekly national sessions, more than 5,000 health workers have joined discussions since October, particularly focusing on integrating HIV and TB services into primary health care. Dr. Olaro highlighted the strong commitment of health workers, many of whom continue to log in using personal laptops and mobile devices despite limited infrastructure, driven by a genuine desire to learn and improve service delivery.

The United States Ambassador to Uganda, William Popp, described the Suprahub as a low-cost, high-yield model that efficiently connects expert clinicians with frontline providers. He noted that the approach optimizes scarce specialist resources, spreads expertise more broadly, and reduces delays in delivering critical knowledge to communities that need it most.

The Uganda Suprahub represents a forward-looking investment in the health workforce, reinforcing the country’s commitment to equitable, high-quality healthcare through innovation and collaboration.
