Hoima City, Uganda – On 24th December 2025, Uganda marked a historic milestone with the grand opening and official commissioning of Hoima City Stadium by H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, accompanied by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni. The state-of-the-art facility stands as a symbol of national progress, strategic infrastructure development, and Uganda’s growing stature in continental sports.
Constructed by the Turkish Firm M/S Summa Construction Ltd under an EPC (Design, Build & Turnkey) contract, the project was closely supervised by the Ministry of Works and Transport, with the National Council of Sports Uganda as the employer. Built between September 2024 and December 2025 at a cost of USD 129 million (approximately UGX 500 billion), the stadium occupies 16.8 hectares and boasts a seating capacity of 20,000.
The commissioning ceremony was vibrant and memorable, featuring a range of sporting and cultural activities. Football history was made as Kitara FC and KCCA FC became the first-ever teams to grace the pitch. Rugby fans were treated to an exciting clash between Rwenzori and Victoria, while Ugandan artistes thrilled the crowd with live performances, underscoring the stadium’s role as a multi-purpose national asset.
In her address, the First Lady Hon. Janet Museveni described the stadium as a “great Christmas gift to our homeland,” giving thanks to God and acknowledging President Museveni’s tireless leadership and guidance in securing funding and facilitating the procurement of M/S Summa. She emphasized government’s commitment to maintaining the facility and ensuring it becomes a sustainable, revenue-generating asset, while urging the people of Bunyoro and the youth to be responsible stewards who use it to nurture talent, unity, and national pride.
President Museveni, in his remarks, welcomed skeptics to witness tangible results of Uganda’s development journey, highlighting innovation and infrastructure growth across the country. He noted that the commissioning of Hoima City Stadium is part of ten major facilities Uganda is developing in preparation for co-hosting the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 alongside Kenya and Tanzania. He commended Summa for the quality work delivered and reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to continued collaboration.
Equipped with a main stadium, a 2,000-seat mini arena, a semi-Olympic swimming pool, athletics track, football pitches, basketball and volleyball courts, 839 parking spaces, a presidential suite, and 12 sky boxes, Hoima City Stadium is truly world-class. Employing 1,067 workers, 69 percent of whom are Ugandans. The completion of Hoima City Stadium positions Uganda strongly for AFCON 2027 and reinforces the country’s ambition to use sports as a driver of national development and international recognition.
