Share

Osaka, Japan – As Uganda continues to assert its growing influence in sports diplomacy on the global stage, Stella Chesang delivered a landmark performance on Sunday, 25 January, storming to victory at the 2026 Osaka Women’s Marathon. Chesang crossed the finish line in 2:19:31, becoming the first Ugandan woman to win a World Athletics Platinum Label marathon in Japan, a historic achievement for both athlete and nation.

Beyond the sporting triumph, Chesang’s victory carried significant diplomatic weight. Competing and prevailing on Japanese soil. One of the world’s most respected marathon nations placed Uganda firmly in the international spotlight, strengthening people-to-people ties and showcasing the country’s athletic excellence as a tool of soft power. Such moments reinforce Uganda’s image as an emerging force in global athletics, using sport as a bridge for international engagement, mutual respect, and cultural exchange.

The race unfolded at a measured pace for much of the early stages, with a tightly packed lead group maintaining control deep into the latter kilometres. However, the decisive moment came late in the race. After 38km, the leading pack began to break apart, signaling the onset of a fierce battle for supremacy.

By the 40km mark, Chesang had edged to the front, passing the checkpoint in 2:12:23, closely shadowed by Hirpa, Edesa, and Japan’s Yada. Demonstrating remarkable composure and strength, Chesang responded decisively over the final kilometres. She reclaimed full control at 41km and unleashed a powerful finishing surge, pulling clear of her challengers and sealing a memorable and authoritative victory.

The national record holder, who finished 12th in the marathon at last year’s World Championships, showed clear progression and maturity in her racing strategy. Her performance in Osaka not only underscored her consistency at elite level but also reaffirmed Uganda’s growing stature in women’s long-distance running.

Chesang took the title in 2:19:31, with Hirpa finishing second in 2:19:54, narrowly ahead of Edesa, who claimed third place in 2:19:56. Yada followed just one second later in 2:19:57, recording the fastest marathon debut ever by a Japanese woman and moving up to sixth on Japan’s all-time marathon rankings.

Chesang’s victory in Osaka stands as a significant milestone in her career and a proud moment for Ugandan athletics, highlighting how elite performance on the world stage continues to enhance Uganda’s international profile, promote national pride, and advance sports diplomacy through excellence.
