United Nations Honours Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces Peacekeepers for Exemplary Service in Somalia

Mogadishu, Somalia – The United Nations has honoured peacekeepers from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) serving under United Nations Guard Unit XI (UNGU XI) in Somalia, in recognition of their outstanding contribution to peace and security. The medals were presented by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to Somalia, Mr. James Swan, during a ceremony held at the UNGU premises in Mogadishu. In his address, Mr. Swan commended the Ugandan contingent for their professionalism, discipline, and steadfast commitment to safeguarding United Nations facilities, which has enabled the organisation to effectively implement its mandate in Somalia.

He noted that the decorations awarded to the UPDF peacekeepers symbolise their dedication to maintaining security and stability, creating an environment in which humanitarian, diplomatic, and development efforts can be carried out peacefully. Mr. Swan further highlighted the significant contribution of female peacekeepers, praising their resilience and vital role in advancing global peace and security.

The Force Commander of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), Lieutenant General Sam Kavuma, applauded the medal recipients for their exemplary service during their tour of duty. He emphasised that such medals are not awarded to all personnel, but are reserved for individuals who demonstrate exceptional performance, professionalism, and commitment to mission objectives. The UNGU XI Commander Lieutenant Colonel Peter Ruyogoza Barigye expressed gratitude to the United Nations and partner organisations for the opportunity to serve. He commended the troops for their resilience and dedication throughout their deployment, describing the medal ceremony as a testament to the hard work, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment of the entire contingent.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the Defence Attaché at the Ugandan Embassy, Brigadier General Francis Chemengich Chemo; AUSSOM Sector One Commander Brigadier General Jackson Kayanja; AUSSOM Police Commissioner AIGP Hillary Sao Kanu; Principal Security Advisor Joseph Katuramu; Chief PREMSEC Pathou Gangale; and a representative of the Somali community, Mama Halima, among others.

Uganda’s continued participation in UN peacekeeping operations underscores its strong commitment to regional stability, multilateral cooperation, and international diplomacy. Through the UPDF’s professionalism and reliability, Uganda reinforces its reputation as a responsible and dependable partner in promoting peace and security in Africa and beyond.
