New Delhi, India – Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation with BRICS countries as the 18th BRICS Summit takes place in New Delhi – India under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
Vice President Rt. Maj. (Rtd.) Jessica Alupo represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at the Summit and delivered an address on his behalf, conveying Uganda’s position on the role of BRICS in shaping a more equitable and cooperative global order. She also congratulated the BRICS member states on the occasion of the 18th Summit and expressed Uganda’s interest in further strengthening cooperation with BRICS countries.
In his message, President Museveni stated that BRICS provides an effective response to renewed attempts to dominate the world through “great-power chauvinism and parasitism.” He emphasised that the emergence and prosperity of countries such as China and India should not be viewed as a threat to the international community, but as an opportunity for shared global progress.
President Museveni noted that “the prosperity of China, India and other countries is not a threat, but an opportunity that benefits all humanity.” He further highlighted the transformative impact of the economic development of China and India, noting that their economic transformation has enabled hundreds of millions of people to attain higher standards of living.
The President’s message underscored Uganda’s support for greater international economic cooperation, particularly among countries of the Global South, and the importance of creating an international environment in which countries can pursue development and prosperity through cooperation rather than domination.
On the margins of the Summit, Vice President Alupo also held a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two sides discussed strengthening Uganda–India relations through cooperation in areas including technology, healthcare, agriculture, capacity building, investment facilitation and private-sector collaboration. They also underscored the importance of closer engagement in advancing the voice of the Global South.
Uganda’s engagement with BRICS is aligned with the country’s broader efforts to expand international partnerships, promote trade and investment, and advance its development priorities through economic and commercial diplomacy. The participation also reflects Uganda’s interest in contributing to discussions on resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability at the global level.
