Changsha, Hunan Province, China – The Embassy of the Republic of Uganda in Beijing convened a high-level Uganda–China (Changsha) Agricultural Trade and Investment Forum in Changsha under the theme “Cultivating Partnerships for Prosperity.” The engagement brought together government officials, investors, private sector leaders, and development partners from both Uganda and China, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening mutually beneficial economic cooperation.

The Forum was positioned as a strategic platform to deepen collaboration between Uganda and Hunan Province, with particular emphasis on agriculture, agro-industrialisation, and value addition. It facilitated dialogue, business-to-business interactions, and investment linkages, while showcasing Uganda’s agricultural potential and readiness for strategic partnerships.

In her remarks, Uganda’s Ambassador to China, H.E. Oliver Wonekha, underscored the significance of the Forum in light of evolving global trade dynamics. She noted that China’s expanded zero-tariff treatment for a range of African exports presents a timely opportunity for Uganda to enhance market access, increase export competitiveness, and advance value addition through agro-processing.The discussions built on the strong foundation of Uganda–China relations, reinforced through sustained diplomatic engagement and growing cooperation with Hunan provincial authorities. Priority sectors identified included agro-processing, agricultural technology, logistics, tourism, mineral development, and innovation-driven agriculture. These areas align closely with Uganda’s national development priorities, particularly under frameworks focused on agro-industrialisation and export-led growth.

Participants explored pathways for translating policy frameworks into practical outcomes, including the development of bankable projects and the strengthening of institutional collaboration. The Forum also provided an avenue to advance partnerships linked to industrial development initiatives, including prospects within dedicated industrial zones. The event attracted senior representatives from Hunan’s provincial institutions, alongside a broad spectrum of enterprises engaged in agriculture, manufacturing, and logistics. Deliberations reflected a shared emphasis on sustainable investment, knowledge exchange, and long-term partnership building.

The Forum marked a significant step in advancing Uganda’s economic diplomacy objectives by aligning diplomatic engagement with tangible trade and investment outcomes. It reaffirmed a collective commitment to leveraging enhanced market access and strategic cooperation to drive industrialisation, job creation, and inclusive growth.
