Kampala, Uganda – Ahead of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Team Uganda was hosted at a reception by Tiffany Kirlew, the British Deputy High Commissioner, on behalf of Lisa Chesney MBE, the British High Commissioner. The reception reaffirmed the enduring partnership between Uganda and the United Kingdom while highlighting the important role of sport in strengthening bilateral relations, fostering people-to-people connections, and promoting international cooperation.
The event brought together Ugandan athletes, coaches, team officials, representatives of the Uganda Olympic Committee, and officials from the British High Commission to celebrate Team Uganda’s participation in one of the Commonwealth’s premier multi-sport events. It also provided an opportunity to recognize the dedication and resilience of the athletes as they prepared to represent Uganda on the international stage.
Team Uganda fielded a contingent of 58 athletes competing in nine sporting disciplines at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland. The team travelled with high expectations of building on Uganda’s proud sporting tradition while showcasing the country’s talent, determination, and sporting excellence before the Commonwealth family.
Since making its Commonwealth Games debut at the 1954 Vancouver Games, Uganda has won 58 medals, reflecting decades of achievement and the country’s growing contribution to international sport. The Glasgow Games presented another opportunity for Ugandan athletes to inspire national pride, strengthen Uganda’s international profile, and demonstrate the country’s continued commitment to sporting excellence.
During the reception, participants underscored the growing importance of sports diplomacy in advancing mutual understanding, cultural exchange, youth empowerment, and cooperation among Commonwealth member states. They observed that international sporting events extend beyond athletic competition by creating opportunities to deepen bilateral partnerships, promote tourism, encourage educational and cultural exchanges, and strengthen collaboration across a wide range of sectors.
The reception further highlighted the United Kingdom’s continued commitment to supporting sports cooperation with Uganda. Such engagements demonstrate how sport serves as an effective instrument of diplomacy by bringing nations and communities together, fostering friendship, promoting shared values, and strengthening international partnerships.
As Uganda continues to expand its global sporting presence, it has gained experiences through international competitions such as the Commonwealth Games reinforcing the importance of investing in athlete development, sports infrastructure, and international collaboration.
