Uganda’s She Cranes secured the silver medal after a 56–34 defeat to South Africa’s Proteas in the final of the 2025 African Netball Cup held in Lilongwe, Malawi.
Coming into the final seeking redemption after last edition’s loss to the same opponents, the She Cranes struggled to find answers as the Proteas dominated from the outset. South Africa raced to an early 4–0 lead, immediately disrupting Uganda’s game plan and placing the She Cranes under intense pressure.
The early intensity forced Uganda into multiple turnovers, as attackers committed unforced errors and shooters struggled to convert opportunities. South Africa capitalized efficiently, comfortably taking the first quarter 15–7. Uganda continued to falter in feeding the shooting circle and displayed challenges in transitioning from defense to attack. Meanwhile, the Proteas remained precise, well-coordinated, and clinical, entering halftime with a commanding 27–16 lead.
Despite tactical adjustments in the second half, Uganda was unable to stem the rising error count. South Africa’s tall and agile shooters proved too formidable for the She Cranes’ defense, widening the gap further. From footwork infringements to fumbles and offensive fouls, Uganda struggled to maintain possession as the Proteas extended their lead to 43–26 by the end of the third quarter. In the final quarter, South Africa maintained momentum and consistency, comfortably defending their title with a 56–34 victory.
While the She Cranes fell short of gold, their performance demonstrates Uganda’s growing presence in continental sports. Sporting engagements such as the African Netball Cup play a strategic role in Uganda’s foreign policy by advancing sports diplomacy. Through international tournaments, Uganda fosters cross-border relationships, strengthens people-to-people connections, and projects a positive national image. The She Cranes’ participation enhances Uganda’s visibility, promotes cultural exchange, and reinforces the country’s commitment to regional cooperation in Africa.
