Kampala, Uganda – Uganda has been selected to host the inaugural Africa Dragon Boat Cup in October 2026, a development officials say will boost sports diplomacy, promote tourism, and enhance Uganda’s visibility on the global sporting stage.
The announcement was made by Solomon Muwonge, President of the Uganda Dragon Boat Federation, during a meeting with Ambassador Richard Kabonero, Head of Regional Economic Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The session was also attended by a visiting delegation from the Africa Dragon Boat Federation, led by President Ehab Gouda and General Secretary Mary Lai, who were in Uganda to assess the country’s readiness for the continental event.
The 2026 Africa Dragon Boat Cup is expected to attract over 500 professional athletes from 16 countries across Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America, alongside hundreds of travelling fans and millions of online viewers.
Ambassador Kabonero welcomed Uganda’s selection, noting that dragon boat racing offers new opportunities for young Ugandans and strengthens people-to-people relations. He stated that the event would provide a platform to discover talent, showcase Uganda, and deepen international engagement.
Dragon boat racing, one of the world’s oldest and most recognizable water sports, originated in China over 2,500 years ago. The sport involves teams paddling rhythmically in long, narrow boats traditionally adorned with dragon heads and tails, guided by a drummer seated at the front to maintain synchrony.
General Secretary Mary Lai emphasized that hosting the Africa Cup provides Uganda with a valuable platform to promote investment, tourism, and trade, while showcasing the country’s potential to the world through sports.
The meeting was also attended by Margaret Kafeero, Head of Public Diplomacy, and Stilson Muhwezi, First Secretary for Sports Diplomacy.
The Uganda Dragon Boat Federation is expected to announce venue details and event preparations in the coming months as the country positions itself to host Africa’s first major dragon boat competition.
