Kampala, Uganda – The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Gen. Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, held a meeting with H.E. Ahmad Mohammed Alzowaidi, Ambassador of the State of Qatar, to discuss bilateral relations and developments in the Middle East. The meeting highlighted the strong ties between Uganda and Qatar, and both sides expressed concern over the instability in the Middle East, particularly the US/Israel-Iran war, and its far-reaching implications on international travel, energy markets, and the global economy.
They noted the need to end the conflict due to its impact on the Middle East, a critical global transit route for people and goods, and Qatar’s vulnerability due to its location and dependence on imports of key items like food. They condemned the targeting of key infrastructure such as water and energy facilities. Uganda expressed solidarity with affected populations, noting that the timing of the war, coinciding with the holy month of Ramadan, was particularly unfortunate.
The meeting also focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in agriculture, with Uganda highlighting its favourable climatic outlook and potential for irrigation and research-led productivity. Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to supporting peace initiatives, humanitarian assistance, and Uganda’s agro-processing sector.
Both parties agreed to convene a technical meeting to advance agricultural cooperation and undertake a humanitarian needs assessment. The meeting concluded with a shared resolve to deepen collaboration between the two nations.
