Mogadishu, Somalia – The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Force (UPDF) contingent serving under the United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU) in Somalia officially marked a change of command, signalling continuity in Uganda’s contribution to international peacekeeping efforts. During a handover ceremony held in Mogadishu, Lt. Col. Peter Barigye formally transferred leadership of UNGU XI to Lt. Col. Nathan Akankunda, who assumes command of UNGU XII. The event was presided over by Raisedon Zenenga, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, who conveyed the United Nations’ appreciation to the outgoing contingent.

Zenenga commended UNGU XI for their dedication, discipline, and professionalism, noting that their efforts ensured the effective protection of United Nations personnel, facilities, and assets. He emphasised that the absence of major security incidents during their deployment reflected their vigilance and strong coordination with partners under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia. The AUSSOM Force Commander, Sam Kavuma, praised Lt. Col. Barigye and his team for successfully completing their mission. He lauded the contingent for representing Uganda with honor and dignity, encouraging them to take pride in their achievements.

In his remarks, Lt. Col. Barigye expressed gratitude to the UPDF leadership for the trust placed in him, highlighting that UNGU XI executed its mandate with commitment and professionalism throughout its tour of duty. Taking over command, Lt. Col. Akankunda congratulated the outgoing unit for its exemplary performance and pledged to build on its successes. He reaffirmed his commitment to effectively executing the UNGU mandate and called for continued cooperation from AUSSOM leadership and the broader UN community in Somalia.
