Kampala, Uganda – The Secretary General of the East African Community (EAC), Amb. Stephen Patrick Mbundi, held bilateral talks with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, current Chairperson of the EAC Summit of Heads of State, in a meeting aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and accelerating the East African integration process.
Amb. Mbundi, accompanied by senior officials from the EAC Secretariat, paid a courtesy call on President Museveni at State Lodge Nakasero in Kampala. The discussions focused on a range of strategic issues considered critical to the growth and stability of the regional bloc. According to officials, the meeting reviewed progress and priorities in regional trade, infrastructure development and institutional strengthening, while also addressing staffing matters and enhanced cooperation in the health sector. The leaders further explored ways of sustaining momentum towards the realization of the East African Community’s broader integration agenda.
The talks come at a time when the EAC is intensifying efforts to deepen economic and political cooperation among its Partner States, with a view to creating a more integrated, prosperous and resilient region. Regional trade and cross-border infrastructure projects have remained key pillars of the bloc’s strategy to boost economic growth and improve the movement of goods, services and people across member countries.
Also present at the meeting was Uganda’s Consul General in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania, Amb. Anne Katusiime Kageye. Arusha hosts the headquarters of the East African Community and serves as a central hub for the bloc’s administrative and diplomatic activities. The engagement underscored the continued collaboration between the EAC Secretariat and Partner States in pursuing common development goals. It also reaffirmed the commitment of member countries to strengthening regional institutions and promoting policies aimed at improving the welfare of citizens across East Africa.
The meeting demonstrates the region’s resolve to address shared challenges through collective action and closer cooperation. As the EAC continues to expand its membership and influence, leaders have emphasised the need for stronger institutions, improved connectivity and coordinated responses to emerging social and economic issues. The discussions concluded with a renewed pledge by the EAC Secretariat and Partner States to advance regional integration and foster sustainable socio-economic development for the people of East Africa.
