Kampala, Uganda – On April 9, 2026, Hon.Okello Henry Oryem held a high-level bilateral meeting with UK Ambassador, Lisa Chesney, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters to discuss regional peace and security challenges. During the meeting, Uganda and the United Kingdom reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening cooperation in addressing pressing security concerns across the region, including conflict dynamics, arms proliferation, and the need for coordinated international responses to promote stability and sustainable development.

The discussions centered on pressing security challenges across the region, with particular attention to the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Both sides expressed concern over the activities of armed groups, including the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and the continued proliferation of illicit arms. They emphasised the urgent need for coordinated regional and international action to curb arms flows and support a sustainable and peaceful resolution to the crisis.

Hon. Oryem highlighted ongoing mediation efforts under the African Union, noting the role of H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in supporting regional peace initiatives. Both parties underscored the importance of strengthening regional mechanisms, particularly through the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, including proposals to establish a framework for monitoring and addressing arms movements within the region.

The situation in Somalia also featured prominently in the discussions. The United Kingdom’s role in advancing Somalia-related deliberations at the United Nations Security Council was acknowledged, alongside its support to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia. Both sides stressed the importance of strengthening Somalia’s national institutions, particularly the development of a capable, professional, and self-sustaining national army.

The meeting further addressed the growing pressures associated with refugee management in the region. Hon. Oryem reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to its progressive and open refugee policy, while calling for increased international support to sustain humanitarian efforts amid rising influxes from neighboring countries.

The engagement concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to sustained dialogue and enhanced cooperation in addressing shared regional challenges. The meeting underscored the importance of strong bilateral partnerships in promoting peace, security, and sustainable development across the region.
