Gaborone, Botswana – Uganda’s film industry is celebrating a landmark victory after “Unheard “a pioneering beneficiary of the Uganda Communications Commission’s Content Development Support Programme (CDSP) swept three top honours at the 2025 Bantu Film Festival held from October 14–18 in Gaborone, Botswana. The festival awarded the film Best Feature Film, Best Director, and Best Writer, cementing its place among Africa’s most compelling contemporary works.

Written and produced by Polly Kamukama, “Unheard” is a powerful testament to the value of nurturing local talent. The CDSP, a Government of Uganda initiative implemented by UCC, supports promising audio-visual creators through financial and technical assistance. The film’s continental success highlights the programme’s growing impact in elevating authentic Ugandan stories to international acclaim.

Set in South-Western Uganda, Unheard follows a young, courageous widow who stands up against long-held traditions in a determined fight for her family’s survival and rightful inheritance. Rooted in truth, courage, and resilience, the film paints a deeply moving portrait of women’s strength in the face of oppression. Its raw storytelling, emotional intensity, and cultural authenticity have captivated audiences and critics across Africa.

What began as a modest UCC-supported project has now become a continental triumph & proof that genuine Ugandan narratives can resonate profoundly on the global stage. Unheard embodies the importance of investing in stories that reflect the lived experiences, struggles, and triumphs of Ugandan communities.

Mr. Kamukama attended the festival in Gaborone to witness his film make history, alongside Dr. Sebastian Okello-Wengi, Honorary Consul of Uganda to Botswana, and his wife, Caroline.Through strategic initiatives like the CDSP, UCC continues to empower local filmmakers to tell original, authentic stories not only for Ugandan audiences, but for the world. Unheard shines as a beacon of what becomes possible when creativity meets opportunity, and when voices once silenced are finally amplified..

With every award and every poignant scene, Unheard transforms silence into strength echoing the voices of women, communities, and a nation ready to claim its place in the global film conversation..

This victory belongs not only to the Unheard team, but to every Ugandan storyteller who dreams, creates, and dares to be heard.
