Kampala, Uganda – On April 8, the United States Embassy Kampala opened its doors for a Community Meet & Greet with the Uganda and United States Women’s National Cricket teams. The event went far beyond a simple photo opportunity.  Members of the Embassy community engaged directly with the players, learning the basics of the game, hearing their personal journeys, and experiencing firsthand, a form of exchange that no formal diplomatic cable can fully capture. The afternoon concluded with a symbolic hat exchange between the two team captains-a simple gesture, yet rich in meaning. Two nations. Two flags. One shared commitment to sport and sportsmanship.

A week later, the tournament reached its climax at the Entebbe Cricket Oval, where Amb. William Popp had the honor of performing the coin toss and officially opening the T20 Women’s Cricket Final. In his remarks, he reflected not only on athletic excellence but also on the unique connections that sport makes possible. He observed that while the two teams come from nations separated by thousands of miles, they are united by a shared love of cricket and a commitment to excellence, underscoring the power of sport to bring people together in ways few other avenues can. He also noted that there is a defining moment in sports, when a match begins, when the noise of the crowd settles into anticipation and when extraordinary action unfolds. For a few hours, divisions fade. What remains is competition, mutual respect, and a shared passion for the game.

Both events were organised as part of the U.S. Department of State’s Decade of Sports Diplomacy (2023–2033), a long-term initiative that recognises athletes among the most effective ambassadors the United States has. Not because they carry talking points or sign agreements, but because they show up, compete with integrity, and build relationships that endure far beyond any single tournament. For those in attendance at the Embassy and in the stands at Entebbe, it was a powerful reminder that diplomacy does not always take the form of formal meetings. Sometimes it looks like a coin toss. Sometimes it looks like a hat exchange. And sometimes, it is simply two national teams stepping onto a pitch together and letting the game speak for itself.
