Uganda Strengthens Trade and Investment Ties with Japan at Networking Event

Kampala, Uganda – On 11th March 2026, in a strategic effort to strengthen bilateral cooperation and expand economic ties, the Embassy of Japan to Uganda in partnership with the Uganda Free Zones and Export Promotions Authority (UFZEPA), hosted a high-level networking event aimed at deepening trade relations and attracting investment.

The engagement provided a platform for dialogue on expanding trade, promoting investment, and advancing industrial development bringing together government officials and representatives from both the Japanese and Ugandan private sectors. Discussions particularly emphasiSed value addition and the importance of building sustainable partnerships between the two countries. Guest of honour at the event, Hon. David Bahati, Minister of State for Industry underscored Uganda’s commitment to strengthening trade relations with Japan and highlighted the importance of sustained engagement between businesses in both countries to unlock new economic opportunities.

He also reflected on past collaborative partnerships such as the Expo 2025 Osaka which put Uganda on the global stage to strengthen its investment potential and tourism base. In addition, highlighting the signing of an MOU during the Expo 2025 in June between UFZEPA and the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry as a significant milestone in opening up pathways for trade opportunities, investments and improving market access and a tangible to carry out trade missions, create investor forums and information packages for stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, Yoshida Norimasa, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Japan in Uganda, noted Uganda’s economic potential, referencing its natural resources, growing population, and market as key factors that could attract increased Japanese investment, while emphasising the need for broader partnerships and deeper integration into the global economy.

 Additionally, Hez Kimoomi Alinda, Executive Director of UFZEPA, noted that bilateral trade with Japan continues to grow, with Uganda exporting about USD 14 million in 2025, largely from coffee, vanilla, cocoa beans, fish, and flowers.
The event concluded with a reaffirmation of the strong economic partnerships between Uganda and Japan, emphasiSing how continued collaboration, investment opportunities, and private sector engagements are key contributors to address trade imbalances and create sustainable business opportunities in both countries, while strengthening economic diplomacy between them.
