Kampala, Uganda – The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, together with his wife, Hon. Okello Oryem the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (International Cooperation), government officials, members of the Diplomatic Corps, and friends of Ireland in Kampala, joined H.E. Mags Gaynor, Ambassador of the Republic of Ireland, for a reception to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

On behalf of the Government and people of Uganda, the Deputy Speaker conveyed warm greetings and congratulations to the Government and people of Ireland on this important national celebration that honours Ireland’s rich history, culture, and heritage. The occasion also provided an opportunity to reflect on the strong and longstanding friendship between Uganda and Ireland. This partnership dates back more than a century, beginning with the arrival of Irish missionaries in Uganda who made remarkable contributions in education, health, and community development.

Hon. Tayebwa noted that these early engagements laid the foundation for the deep and enduring cooperation that the two countries continue to enjoy to this day. He further stated that Ireland remains a valued partner in Uganda’s development journey, supporting key sectors like education, agricultural livelihoods, governance, humanitarian assistance, and community resilience. He emphasised that programmes such as the Karamoja Bursary Scheme and the Irish Fellowship Programme have created opportunities for many young Ugandans to access quality education and acquire skills that contribute to national development.

The Deputy Speaker noted that as Uganda advances its national transformation agenda under Uganda Vision 2040, the country looks forward to further strengthening cooperation with Ireland in areas such as vocational education and skills development, modern agriculture for rural transformation, climate resilience, and expanded bilateral trade and investment.
