Uganda, Kenya and Egypt Launch AI-Powered Climate Camera into Space in Landmark Mission

Uganda, Kenya and Egypt have marked a historic milestone in space innovation with the successful launch of an artificial intelligence-powered climate monitoring camera to the International Space Station (ISS). The Climate Camera (ClimCam) payload was launched on April 11, 2026, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket as part of the Cygnus resupply mission to the International Space Station. The mission represents a major step forward in Africa’s growing role in space science and climate technology.

“ClimCam” is a joint Earth observation project developed by the three countries under the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs–Airbus “Access to Space for All” programme. Once fully deployed on the Airbus Bartolomeo platform, the system will provide high-resolution imagery at approximately 10-meter accuracy, with up to four daily passes over Eastern Africa. What sets “ClimCam” apart is its integration of advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities, making it the first camera aboard the ISS to enable real-time, on-orbit climate impact detection. From its orbit about 400 kilometers above Earth, the system will support flood monitoring, drought assessment, agricultural planning, disaster response, and environmental management across the region.

The Government of Uganda played a key role in the project by funding specialised training for engineers at the Egyptian Space Agency, strengthening national capacity in space technology and innovation. The initiative underscores Uganda’s commitment to leveraging science and technology for socio-economic transformation. Monica Musenero Masanza highlighted the project’s significance, noting that the partnership demonstrates the transformative potential of African-led space collaboration in addressing climate challenges. The mission also celebrates the contributions of Ugandan engineers, including Gerald Kisangala, Kalyankolo Zaina, Nalwanga Rosemary, and Ongom Christopher Adoko, whose expertise in embedded systems, printed circuit board design, and firmware development was instrumental to the project’s success. Beyond the launch, “ClimCam” represents a strategic investment in environmental monitoring, regional cooperation, and data sovereignty positioning Africa at the forefront of innovative, space-based climate solutions.
