Staff of the Uganda High Commission in Ottawa, in partnership with the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) and tourism consultant Ms. Lorraine Simpson, participated in the IMPACT Sustainability Travel and Tourism Summit held from January 25–28, 2026, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The annual summit is recognised as British Columbia’s signature provincial tourism platform, convening global industry leaders to deliberate on the future of travel with a strong emphasis on sustainability, regeneration and local community development. The event continues to grow in stature, attracting stakeholders committed to shaping responsible tourism practices worldwide.

This year’s summit brought together a diverse network of participants, including tourism boards, conservation organizations, destination managers, indigenous leadership, media practitioners, and industry strategists. Through plenary sessions, panel discussions, and experiential engagements, participants explored innovative approaches to building tourism models that balance economic growth with environmental stewardship and cultural preservation.

A central theme that dominated discussions was the critical role of local communities in shaping the future of tourism. Speakers and delegates repeatedly underscored that authentic community involvement is no longer optional but essential to sustainable destination development. Particular emphasis was placed on the power of storytelling how the narratives, heritage, and lived experiences of local people create meaningful visitor connections.

Delegates noted that modern travelers are increasingly seeking immersive, purpose-driven experiences rather than conventional sightseeing. It is these authentic stories shared through culture, conservation efforts, and community enterprises that leave lasting impressions and inspire repeat visits. The consensus was clear: tourism that benefits and empowers host communities ultimately strengthens destination competitiveness.

Uganda’s participation provided an opportunity to showcase the country’s commitment to sustainable tourism development, conservation, and community-based tourism initiatives. Engagements on the sidelines of the summit also enabled the delegation to exchange best practices, build partnerships, and position Uganda as a destination aligned with global sustainability priorities. The High Commission reaffirmed its continued collaboration with the Uganda Tourism Board and industry stakeholders to promote Uganda’s unique tourism offerings in North America while integrating sustainability principles that ensure long-term sector resilience.
