Entebbe, Uganda – President Yoweri Museveni hosted the British author, environmentalist and former Member of the European Parliament, Mr. Stanley Johnson during his ongoing visit to Uganda. Johnson, who is also the father of former United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson, is touring the country’s key tourism and conservation sites in a visit that underscores Uganda’s growing global profile in eco-tourism and sustainable development.

Johnson’s tour, undertaken at the invitation of Uganda’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, H.E. Nimisha Madhvani, is designed to showcase Uganda’s natural beauty, cultural heritage and investment potential. During his stay, he is visiting a range of iconic destinations including Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Kyambura Gorge, the Kazinga Channel, Kibale National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Source of the Nile in Jinja.

Speaking after their meeting, President Museveni welcomed Johnson and expressed appreciation for his recognition of the strong link between environmental conservation and tourism development. The President emphasised Uganda’s commitment to protecting its natural ecosystems while leveraging them for socio-economic transformation.

Johnson’s itinerary combines wildlife tourism, conservation engagements and high-level meetings with government and sector stakeholders. His site visits have been supported by Volcanoes Safaris, the eco-tourism company founded by conservationist Praveen Moman, with whom Johnson shares a long association in promoting responsible tourism.

While appearing on UBC Television Uganda, Johnson thanked President Museveni, the government and the people of Uganda for their warm hospitality. Reflecting on his return visit, he noted Uganda’s visible progress and economic momentum.

“There’s a real sense of vigour and dynamism in this country. I have a sense that you’re on a little bit of an economic uplift at the moment,” he observed, while stressing the importance of ensuring that development advances alongside environmental protection.

A long-time advocate for wildlife conservation, Johnson expressed particular excitement about revisiting Uganda’s primate habitats. He highlighted his anticipation of seeing chimpanzees in Kibale and mountain gorillas in Mgahinga, species he has championed through his environmental writing.

Describing Uganda as “a wonderful country, not just for the people but for the wildlife as well,” Johnson’s visit reinforces international interest in the country’s conservation efforts. His tour is expected to generate valuable global visibility for Uganda’s sustainable tourism initiatives and strengthen partnerships that support environmental protection and community development.
