At a time when African nations are increasingly looking to their diaspora communities as strategic partners in national transformation, Ethiopia is offering a compelling example of how citizens abroad can return home and build institutions that create lasting impact.
While attending the African Diaspora Stakeholders Forum in Addis Ababa, Mr. Mohammed Bagonza, Head of the State House Diaspora Unit, encountered a remarkable story that carries important lessons for Uganda’s diaspora community. Together with his deputy, Henry Wabyona, and other African diaspora stakeholders, he visited several diaspora-founded establishments in Ethiopia. Among the most inspiring was the American Medical Centre (AMC), established in 2012 by Ethiopian-American physician Akeza Teame and his wife, Mrs. Melat Abate. After spending two decades in the United States pursuing education and professional training, Dr. Teame returned to Ethiopia with a mission to bridge critical gaps in healthcare delivery. What began as a vision to provide patient-centred medical care has since evolved into one of Ethiopia’s respected multi-specialty medical institutions.
Today, AMC stands as a centre of excellence offering specialised healthcare services in Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Paediatrics, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Psychiatry and advanced diagnostics. Beyond the hospital itself, Dr. Teame has expanded his contribution through other transformative initiatives, including Samaritan Surgical Centre, Axon Stroke and Spine Centre, Caduceus Pharmaceuticals Plc and the digital health platform HabariDOC. Collectively, these investments are helping reduce the need for patients to seek treatment abroad while strengthening Ethiopia’s healthcare ecosystem. For Uganda, this story speaks to the untapped potential within its own diaspora community. Ugandans living abroad possess valuable expertise, global networks, innovation exposure and financial capacity that can significantly contribute to national development if effectively harnessed.
Mr. Bagonza noted that diaspora engagement should extend beyond remittances. The greater opportunity lies in knowledge transfer, institution building, technology adoption and long-term investment capable of transforming communities and economies. As Uganda advances its socio-economic transformation agenda, stories such as Dr. Teame’s demonstrate that diaspora communities are not merely observers of national progress, but active partners in shaping it. With the right support, policy environment and patriotic commitment, Ugandans abroad can equally return home to build enterprises and institutions that leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
