Kampala, Uganda – The American Embassy in Uganda, hosted vibrant watch parties for the FIFA World Cup fixtures at the American Center Kampala, between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Türkiye, bringing together football enthusiasts, sports administrators, media professionals, students, and members of the public to celebrate the unifying power of sport.
As one of the co-hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico, the United States used the watch party series to extend the excitement of the tournament to Ugandan audiences while promoting people-to-people engagement, cultural exchange, and the values of sportsmanship. Although the United States national team exited the tournament in the Round of 16, the country’s successful co-hosting of the global spectacle demonstrated the transformative role that major sporting events can play in fostering international cooperation, tourism, economic activity, and community engagement.
The event combined the excitement of one of the tournament’s headline fixtures with an engaging panel discussion that was moderated by Hope Ampurire, Sports Journalist at New Vision, the Panelists included Edgar Watson, Chief Executive Officer of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), and Moses Magero, Public Relations, Media and Communications Officer at KCCA FC.
The discussion explored the growing significance of sports diplomacy in advancing economic development, promoting tourism, creating employment opportunities, strengthening international partnerships, and unlocking business opportunities associated with major sporting events. Panelists emphasized that football has evolved beyond competition to become an important platform for public diplomacy, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, innovation, and international collaboration.
The dialogue also drew valuable lessons for Uganda as it prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Kenya and Tanzania under the historic Pamoja initiative. Participants observed that the tournament presents a unique opportunity to showcase East Africa as a united destination while strengthening regional integration, expanding tourism, attracting investment, and enhancing cultural exchange across the region.
For Uganda, the successful hosting of AFCON 2027 is expected to leave a lasting legacy through investments in sports infrastructure, transport networks, hospitality, and urban development. The tournament is also anticipated to create employment opportunities, stimulate local businesses, promote youth participation in sport, and elevate Uganda’s international profile as a destination for investment and tourism.
The American Embassy’s watch party initiatives demonstrate how sport can serve as a bridge between nations, fostering dialogue, mutual understanding, and stronger people-to-people ties.
