Kampala, Uganda – Uganda and Norway have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic ties following the successful conclusion of a one-day bilateral consultation meeting in Kampala. The high-level talks, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, were co-chaired by Hon. John Mulimba and Hon. Asmund Grover Aukrust, Norway’s Minister for International Cooperation. Discussions focused on enhancing economic cooperation, addressing regional peace and security concerns, and reinforcing multilateral engagement. Speaking during the meeting, Hon. Mulimba expressed appreciation for Norway’s continued support to Uganda’s development agenda, particularly in education, renewable energy, and women’s empowerment initiatives. He, however, raised concern over the relatively low levels of trade between the two countries. Uganda’s exports to Norway were valued at approximately $1 million in 2024, compared to imports worth about $6 million. The Minister emphasised the need for targeted strategies to boost trade volumes and unlock untapped economic potential.
Mr. Aukrust welcomed the opportunity to deepen cooperation, noting the longstanding and cordial relations between the two countries. He highlighted their collaboration in multilateral platforms and joint efforts in advancing peacebuilding initiatives in the region. He also commended Uganda for its progressive refugee policy, describing it as exemplary given the country’s proximity to conflict-affected areas.
Regional peace and security featured prominently in the discussions, with both sides recognising Uganda’s role in promoting stability through participation in peacekeeping and mediation efforts. They underscored the importance of inclusive dialogue involving all stakeholders as a pathway to achieving sustainable peace across the region. On global governance, the two parties agreed on the urgency of reforming the United Nations to better reflect contemporary global realities and improve its effectiveness in addressing emerging international challenges.
In a significant step toward expanding economic engagement, Uganda and Norway agreed to organise a Norway–Uganda Trade and Investment Summit before the end of 2027. The summit is expected to serve as a platform for attracting Norwegian investments into Uganda while promoting bilateral trade and business partnerships. Mr. Aukrust was accompanied by Tone Tinnås, Ambassador of Norway to Uganda and several neighboring countries; Kyrre Holm, Director for Africa at Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Andre Stiansen. Both sides concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to sustained dialogue and practical cooperation aimed at advancing shared economic and strategic priorities.
