Ashgabat, Turkmenistan – Uganda has made a compelling debut at the Turkmen Travel 2026, signaling a strategic push to diversify its tourism markets and elevate its global visibility. Held in Ashgabat, the international exhibition and conference provided a dynamic platform for Uganda to position itself as a premier destination for nature, culture, and adventure tourism. Uganda’s participation was spearheaded by Twaha Matata, Chargé d’Affaires at the Uganda Embassy in Tehran, accredited to Turkmenistan. This engagement reflects a broader diplomatic strategy to strengthen tourism partnerships, unlock emerging markets, and deepen bilateral relations beyond traditional regions.
In a notable milestone, Uganda stood as the only African country represented at this year’s Expo, its first appearance at the platform marking a significant step in expanding its international tourism outreach. The Ugandan delegation, led by Geoffrey Sseremba, Under Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism Wildlife and Antiquities Uganda, alongside a team of private tour operators, brought energy and distinction to the exhibition floor. The Uganda Pavilion attracted considerable interest, with visitors drawn to the country’s exceptional biodiversity, dramatic landscapes, and rare wildlife encounters. From the Rwenzoris snow-capped peaks to the iconic Source of the Nile, Uganda’s natural assets continue to resonate with global audiences. A highlight of Uganda’s participation was the visit by Seyidova Bahar Hojamuradovna, Deputy Prime Minister for Culture and Mass Media, who represented the President during a tour of the pavilion. Her presence underscored growing interest in Uganda’s tourism potential and reaffirmed opportunities for enhanced cultural and diplomatic cooperation.
Speaking at the Expo, Amb. Matata emphasised Uganda’s openness to tourists from Turkmenistan and the wider region, noting the country’s unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. On the sidelines, Uganda engaged in bilateral discussions with Turkmen authorities, exploring frameworks for collaboration in tourism development, cultural exchange, and educational linkages, including engagements with relevant institutions. Uganda’s presence at Turkmen Travel 2026 reflects a forward-looking commitment to tourism diplomacy leveraging international platforms to build partnerships, attract investment, and share its story with new audiences. As the country continues to position itself on the global stage, such engagements reinforce Uganda’s identity as a destination of diversity, authenticity, and enduring appeal.
