Geneva, Switzerland – H.E. Marcel Robert Tibaleka, Permanent Representative and Amb. Arthur S. Kafeero, Deputy Permanent Representative of Uganda to the United Nations in Geneva met with Dr. Brenda Akia, the Vice Chair and Rapporteur of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW Committee). Dr. Akia was first elected to the UN CEDAW Committee in 2022, making her election historic as she became the first Ugandan and youngest African to ever be elected to serve on the United Nations since it was established in 1982.
Based on her distinguished appointments on the Committee as the Vice-Chair and Rapporteur of the Committee, as well as the Chair of the Africa Group, the Government of Uganda has presented her candidature for re-election to Committee for the term 2027-2030. The UN CEDAW Committee is the United Nations treaty body on women and girls’ rights that monitors the implementation of the UN CEDAW Convention globally.
