Entebbe, Uganda – The Head of the State House Diaspora Unit, Mohammed Bagonza, hosted a strategic engagement with Kaarin Knudson, Mayor of Eugene, Oregon, aimed at advancing international collaboration and reinforcing community-driven development initiatives between Uganda and the United States.
The meeting underscored the importance of sustained partnerships in driving inclusive growth and institutional strengthening. Both parties explored avenues for expanding cooperation in research and development, promoting cross-border investment, and enhancing engagement between Ugandan institutions and the City of Eugene.
In his remarks, Mr. Bagonza conveyed a message from Sharifah Buzeki, the Executive Director of the Kampala Capital City Authority, reaffirming Kampala’s commitment to building stronger institutional linkages and deepening collaboration with Eugene. The discussions highlighted the potential for structured partnerships that can facilitate knowledge exchange, technical cooperation, and sustainable urban development.
The engagement further emphasised the growing role of diaspora-led initiatives in strengthening bilateral ties. Participants noted that government-supported diaspora programs are increasingly contributing to economic empowerment, while enabling the transfer of skills, expertise, and innovation between Uganda and the United States. A key moment of the meeting was the recognition of Sylvia Kakyo for her outstanding service and leadership within the diaspora community. Her efforts in fostering connections between Uganda, KCCA, and the City of Eugene were acknowledged as instrumental in building enduring diplomatic and institutional relationships.
The meeting marked an important milestone in Uganda–United States engagement at the sub-national level, reaffirming a shared commitment to dialogue, mutual understanding, and the advancement of strategic partnerships. Both sides expressed optimism that continued collaboration will unlock new opportunities for inclusive development, innovation, and global cooperation.
