Kampala, Uganda – The United States Embassy in Kampala, in partnership with the American Football Federation of Uganda (AFFU), successfully hosted a Super Bowl LX watch party at the American Center in Nsambya. The event brought together sports enthusiasts to witness an exciting matchup in which the Seattle Seahawks defeated the New England Patriots 29–13 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, before a crowd of more than 68,000 spectators.
Lana Surface, an official at the U.S. Embassy in Kampala, welcomed and thanked guests for attending the Super Bowl LX watch party. In her remarks, she reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to organising similar events that promote American sports while also celebrating and supporting Ugandan athletics. She emphasised that such initiatives are part of the Embassy’s broader goal of advancing sports diplomacy and strengthening connections between the people of Uganda and the United States, particularly as America commemorates its 250th anniversary this year. Ms. Surface further encouraged the public to regularly visit the American Center and take advantage of its free resources and services, including the computer laboratory, library, educational materials, and academic advising services. She noted that the Center serves as a hub for learning, cultural exchange, and community engagement.
The watch party was graced by the General Secretary of the National Council of Sports (NCS), Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel, along with various stakeholders and enthusiasts of American football in Uganda. In his remarks, Steven George Okeng, President of the American Football Federation of Uganda (AFFU), described the occasion as one of the most significant sporting events he had ever experienced, highlighting its importance in raising the profile of American football in the country.
For many attendees, the event was both entertaining and educational. Shivan Komugisha, a fan of American football, noted that the game deepened her understanding of the sport’s rules and regulations. Meanwhile, Latifah Kizito, a sports merchandise entrepreneur, appreciated the spirit of teamwork and unity displayed throughout the match. She also expressed interest in the design and branding of the teams’ jerseys, reflecting the broader economic and creative dimensions associated with international sports.
The Super Bowl LX watch party at the American Center demonstrated the power of sports as a unifying force that transcends borders. Through sports diplomacy initiatives such as this, the U.S. Embassy and its partners continue to foster mutual understanding, cultural exchange, and people-to-people ties between Uganda and the United States, strengthening bilateral relations through the universal language of sport.
