Uganda and China Reaffirm Strong Bilateral Ties as Ambassador Zhang Concludes Tour of Duty

Kampala, Uganda – Uganda and China have reaffirmed their long-standing bilateral relations following a high-level meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gen. Odongo Jeje Abubakher, and H.E. Zhang Lizhong, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Uganda. The meeting took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Headquarters in Kampala and underscored the depth, resilience, and forward-looking nature of cooperation between the two countries.The engagement aimed at consolidating the strong partnership Uganda and China have built over the years anchored in mutual respect, shared development aspirations, and constructive political dialogue. Both sides reflected on the steady growth of relations across multiple sectors, including infrastructure development, trade, investment, human capital development, and people-to-people exchanges.

During the discussions, Ambassador Zhang conveyed warm congratulations to H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Honourable Minister, and the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Government upon their re-election in the recently concluded general elections. He noted that Uganda’s political stability continues to provide a solid foundation for sustained cooperation and long-term development partnerships. The meeting also served as a farewell call by Ambassador Zhang Lizhong, who is concluding his tour of duty as Head of Mission in Uganda. Reflecting on his tenure, the Ambassador expressed appreciation for the cordial working relationship with the Government of Uganda and reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Uganda’s development priorities through mutually beneficial cooperation. 

In response, Hon. Gen. Jeje Odongo congratulated Ambassador Zhang on the successful completion of his assignment and acknowledged the significant progress registered in Uganda–China relations during his tenure. He noted that the period had been marked by strengthened political trust, expanded economic cooperation, and enhanced collaboration in key development sectors.

In his concluding remarks, the Minister thanked Amb. Zhang for his inclusive, flexible, and engaging diplomatic approach, which contributed positively to deepening bilateral ties. He extended best wishes to the Ambassador in his future assignments, expressing confidence that the strong bonds between Uganda and China would continue to grow for the benefit of both nations.
