In a colorful event organised by dfcu Bank in partnership with Vision Group, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, and Koudijs BV, 10 outstanding Ugandan farmers were flagged off for a weeklong study tour in the Netherlands. The initiative aims to expose them to world-class agricultural innovations, modern agribusiness models, and best practices that can drive transformation in Uganda’s farming sector.
The Netherlands Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Frederieke Quispel, used the occasion to challenge Uganda to fully unlock its agricultural potential and position itself among the world’s leading exporters of agricultural products. Speaking at the 2025 Best Farmers Competition flag-off ceremony held at dfcu Tower in Kampala, Ambassador Quispel commended Uganda’s abundant natural wealth—fertile soils, favorable climate, and vast water resources—describing them as a solid foundation for global agricultural success. “Uganda has everything,” she said. “What is stopping you from becoming the world’s largest exporter of agricultural produce?”
Ambassador Quispel emphasised the importance of inclusive financing, calling on financial institutions to extend greater support to women and youth in agriculture. “Access to finance is critical,” she noted, reaffirming the Netherlands’ commitment to encouraging more young people to see agriculture as a viable and profitable career.
Dfcu Bank Managing Director, Charles Mudiwa, reiterated the Bank’s commitment to transforming Uganda’s agriculture, revealing that dfcu has invested over USD 22 million in agricultural linkages this year alone, reaching more than 59,000 beneficiaries nationwide. “Ugandan farmers have an appointment with the future,” Mudiwa remarked. “We will continue to support you and ensure your success.”
Representing the Ministry of Agriculture, Stephen Byantware, Commissioner for Crop Protection, applauded the Best Farmers initiative for strengthening agricultural value chains and empowering farmers through knowledge exchange. He urged the participants to return as “positive ambassadors of Uganda,” sharing their new skills and experiences to inspire others.
Now a celebrated annual event, the Best Farmers Competition continues to deepen cooperation between Uganda and the Netherlands—fostering innovation, knowledge sharing, and sustainable growth across Uganda’s agricultural sector.
