London, UK – The Ugandan community in the United Kingdom gathered in vibrant celebration during the Uganda Cultural Fusion event held in South London under the theme “Unity, Identity and Culture,” reaffirming the strength and diversity of Uganda’s diaspora and its enduring connection to the homeland. Organised by Mr. Baker Kiyingi together with members of the Ugandan diaspora, the event brought together Ugandans and friends of Uganda in an atmosphere filled with colour, music, and shared cultural pride. This initiative created a dynamic platform for showcasing Uganda’s rich heritage through traditional dance, music performances, cuisine, language expressions, fashion displays, and cultural artefacts.
Representing the Government of Uganda, H.E Amb. Nimisha Madhvani, Uganda’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ambassador to Ireland, noted the importance of unity and cultural identity among Ugandans living abroad in her address, adding that despite Uganda’s diversity, its people remain bound by a shared national spirit and pride. Amb. Madhvani commended the organisers for fostering a strong sense of belonging within the diaspora community and for creating a space where cultural expression can thrive. She highlighted that culture remains a powerful instrument of national development, social cohesion, and international engagement, particularly in strengthening Uganda’s image abroad.
She further underscored the Government of Uganda’s commitment to preserving and promoting cultural heritage through partnerships with cultural institutions and diaspora networks. According to her, the diaspora is not only a cultural bridge but also a strategic partner in national transformation, contributing through investment, tourism promotion, innovation, and skills transfer. The Ambassador’s address focused on the importance of passing cultural knowledge to younger generations born or raised abroad. She encouraged parents and community leaders to ensure that Ugandan languages, traditions, and values are actively taught and preserved to sustain identity across generations. The event also featured an exhibition of Ugandan crafts and cultural products, including bark cloth, handmade artefacts, and locally inspired creative works. These displays offered guests a deeper appreciation of Uganda’s artistic heritage and craftsmanship.
Participants enjoyed live performances, traditional cuisine, and networking opportunities that strengthened social bonds within the diaspora community. The celebration served not only as a cultural showcase but also as a reminder of the importance of unity in diversity.
