Share

Uganda has stepped up efforts to expand its footprint in the Chinese market, through its participation at HOTELEX Shanghai 2026 where it showcased premium agricultural products. The event, held in Shanghai, provided a high-profile platform to present coffee, tea, and dairy offerings to a global audience. Led by the Uganda Embassy in Beijing, the country’s exhibition booth was themed “From the Source of the Nile to the Streets of Shanghai,” reflecting Uganda’s ambition to connect its agricultural heritage directly with international consumers. The display emphasised quality, sustainability, and the unique origins of Ugandan produce, positioning the country as an emerging supplier of premium goods within China’s hospitality and retail sectors.

The initiative comes at a critical time, just ahead of a zero-tariff policy scheduled to take effect in May 2026. This policy is expected to significantly boost the competitiveness of Ugandan exports in China, opening new opportunities for producers and exporters seeking to access one of the world’s largest consumer markets. Visitors to the Uganda pavilion were treated to an immersive experience designed to highlight both product quality and cultural identity. Live coffee cupping sessions allowed buyers to sample Uganda’s renowned Arabica and Robusta varieties, while a dedicated business-to-business desk provided guidance on export procedures and tariff-free trade arrangements. Cultural performances added a dynamic element, offering insight into Uganda’s traditions and storytelling.

Speaking at the event, Uganda’s Ambassador to China, Oliver Wonekha, underscored the broader significance of the showcase. She noted that the platform not only demonstrates the quality of Uganda’s agricultural products but also reinforces the country’s commitment to building strong commercial partnerships with Chinese stakeholders. Officials at the booth highlighted a shift in Uganda’s trade strategy, moving beyond conventional export models toward a more integrated approach that prioritises relationship-building and market access. By acting as a commercial bridge, the embassy aims to connect Ugandan producers directly with buyers, including hotel chains, distributors, and e-commerce platforms.

Uganda’s presence at the exhibition signals its growing ambition to position itself as a leading supplier of high-quality agricultural products on the global stage. With favorable climate conditions and fertile soils, the country has built a strong reputation, particularly in coffee production, and is now leveraging international platforms to expand its reach. The showcase ultimately reflects Uganda’s broader economic strategy: strengthening trade ties with China while promoting sustainably produced goods that meet the demands of an increasingly quality-conscious global market.
