Kampala, Uganda – The Government of Uganda reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to regional peace and security during a high-level meeting held at the Office of the Prime Minister with senior leadership of the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). The meeting was chaired by the Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja the Prime Minister of Uganda who was accompanied by the Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth, and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in charge of International Affairs, Hon. Oryem Henry Okello. They received the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) and Head of AUSSOM, El Hadji Ibrahima Diene, who was accompanied by the AUSSOM Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Sam Kavuma.
The engagement brought together officials from Uganda’s security and diplomatic establishments, including the Head of Mission in Somalia, H.E. Prof. Sam Turyamuhika, the Permanent Secretary of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces, Mrs. Rosette Byengoma, the Chief of Joint Staff, Lt. Gen. Jack Bakasumba, and the Deputy Commander Land Force, Maj. Gen. Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga.
During the meeting, Ambassador Diene conveyed the African Union’s deep appreciation to the Government and people of Uganda for their consistent and significant contribution to peacekeeping efforts on the continent, particularly in Somalia. He commended Ugandan personnel serving under the African Union flag, noting their pioneering role and sustained commitment to promoting stability and security.
In response, Prime Minister Nabbanja reiterated Uganda’s readiness to continue supporting the mandate and strategic objectives of AUSSOM. She emphasised that Uganda remained firmly committed to working alongside regional and international partners to achieve sustainable peace and stability in Somalia. The meeting underscored Uganda’s central role in regional peacekeeping efforts and highlighted the importance of continued collaboration between the African Union and troop-contributing countries in addressing security challenges across the continent.
