Uganda High Commission Kigali Hosts Rwenzori Marathon Activation

Kigali, Rwanda –   The Uganda High Commission Kigali, hosted a vibrant Rwenzori Marathon activation event that brought together an energetic gathering of 200 participants in a celebration of fitness, wellness, and regional camaraderie. The event was officially flagged off by Mr. Michael Bulwaka, Counsellor, accompanied by Mission staff from the Uganda High Commission, Kigali. The activation formed part of ongoing efforts to promote Uganda’s sports tourism and strengthen cross-border engagement through athletic and recreational initiatives.

Organised in close collaboration with Amos Wekesa, founder of the Rwenzori Marathon, alongside his Ugandan team and co-organisers, the event highlighted the growing regional appeal of Uganda’s flagship sporting events. Participants engaged in a lively morning session that combined light running activities, fitness exercises, and interactive discussions promoting healthy living and regional integration. The atmosphere was marked by enthusiasm and unity, as participants from diverse backgrounds came together to celebrate sport as a bridge between communities.

Speaking at the activation, organisers emphasized the importance of promoting endurance sports as a tool for tourism development and people-to-people diplomacy. They noted that the Rwenzori Marathon continues to position Uganda as a leading destination for sports tourism in East Africa, attracting both professional athletes and recreational runners from across the region and beyond.

The Uganda High Commission reiterated its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote Uganda’s visibility abroad, particularly in areas of tourism, culture, and sports diplomacy. The activation in Kigali was described as a strategic engagement aimed at building anticipation for upcoming editions of the marathon while strengthening Uganda–Rwanda ties through shared sporting experiences. The successful event concluded with renewed enthusiasm among participants, who expressed appreciation for the initiative and interest in participating in future editions of the Rwenzori Marathon in Uganda. The activation further underscored the role of sports in fostering regional cooperation, wellness, and cultural exchange across East Africa.
