Uganda and Russia Reaffirm Strong Bilateral Ties Ahead of 2026 Russia-Africa Summit

Kampala, Uganda – Uganda and Russia reaffirmed their longstanding cordial relations following a bilateral meeting held between Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon.Gen. Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, and Mr. Sergey Lobanov, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Russian Embassy in Uganda. The meeting highlighted the growing diplomatic engagement between the two countries and their shared commitment to expanding cooperation across strategic sectors.

During the discussions, Uganda officially received an invitation to participate in the Third Russia-Africa Summit, which is scheduled to take place from October 28 to 29, 2026, in Moscow, Moscow. The summit is expected to bring together African leaders, policymakers, investors, and business communities to strengthen partnerships between Russia and African nations in areas of mutual interest.

The bilateral engagement underscored the importance both countries attach to enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, technology transfer, and economic development. Uganda and Russia also explored opportunities for collaboration in innovation, infrastructure development, and capacity building, reflecting a broader vision for sustainable growth and mutually beneficial partnerships.

In addition to economic cooperation, the meeting emphasised the shared commitment of both nations to promoting regional and international peace and security. Uganda and Russia acknowledged the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and multilateral cooperation in addressing global challenges and maintaining stability across regions. The invitation to the Russia-Africa Summit further demonstrates Uganda’s active role in international diplomacy and its continued efforts to deepen relations with global partners. Uganda’s participation in the summit is expected to provide a valuable platform for strengthening bilateral ties with Russia while opening new avenues for economic and strategic cooperation.

The meeting between Hon. Gen. Odongo Jeje Abubakhar and Mr. Sergey Lobanov reflects the enduring friendship between Uganda and Russia, built on decades of diplomatic engagement and shared aspirations for development, peace, and prosperity.
