Cologne, Germany – The Embassy of the Republic of Uganda in Berlin joined members of the Ugandan diaspora and friends of Uganda for a friendly football match between UG Lions Germany and Dutch Cranes Netherlands in Cologne, Germany. The exciting encounter ended in a 4–4 draw, and showcased the spirit of friendship, unity, and sportsmanship among Ugandans living across Europe.

Represented by Ms. Jessica Namuddu, Second Secretary, at the Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to engaging and supporting Ugandan communities abroad while promoting Uganda’s culture, values, and national identity. The event attracted hundreds of participants from Germany, the Netherlands, and neighbouring countries. It provided a platform for community interaction, cultural exchange, and networking. The fixture served as a precursor to the Euro Cranes Tournament 2026, scheduled to take place in Amsterdam from 3–5 July, which annually brings together Ugandan diaspora teams from across Europe to celebrate football, friendship, and cultural heritage.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Namuddu emphasized the importance of sports diplomacy in strengthening diaspora relations, fostering community cohesion, and enhancing Uganda’s visibility on the international stage. She reiterated the continued support of the Embassy and the Government of Uganda for initiatives that unite Ugandans abroad and promote positive engagement through sport.

The event highlighted the growing role of sports diplomacy as a tool for building people-to-people connections, promoting cultural understanding, and strengthening Uganda’s international image. As Uganda continues to engage its diaspora communities worldwide, such initiatives demonstrate how sport can serve as a powerful platform for unity, friendship, and national pride while contributing to broader diplomatic and development objectives.
