London, UK – Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, met with His Royal Highness Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh and Vice Patron of Commonwealth Sport, to discuss upcoming events and the organisation’s future plans. During the meeting, Dr. Rukare briefed the Duke on preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games in Malta, and the Centenary Commonwealth Games scheduled for 2030 in Ahmedabad, India.

Their discussions focused on key milestones, preparations for future Games, and the role of sport in promoting unity, development, and opportunity across the 56-member Commonwealth. Dr. Rukare also expressed appreciation for Prince Edward’s continued guidance and support in advancing the mission of Commonwealth Sport. The meeting highlighted the importance of sport in strengthening international cooperation and promoting youth empowerment and sustainable development. For Uganda, engagement in Commonwealth sporting structures supports sports diplomacy by strengthening global partnerships, enhancing the country’s international visibility, and creating opportunities for young athletes.

Meanwhile, during celebrations marking Commonwealth Day, Commonwealth Games Uganda, in partnership with Tooke Republic, launched Uganda’s official countdown to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games at The Olive School Namugongo. The event featured Dr. Rukare engaging with students about the significance of the Games and welcomed Joseph Masembe and Prof. Muranga, who was introduced as the new Nutrition Ambassador. The celebration emphasised Commonwealth values of unity, equality, and humanity, while highlighting sport’s role in promoting social transformation, environmental awareness, and international cooperation.
