Entebbe, Uganda – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni reviewed Uganda’s preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Kenya and Tanzania, emphasising the need for accelerated preparations to ensure that Uganda is fully ready to host the continental tournament to the required international standards.

The President met with CAF Secretary General Samson Adamu and the National AFCON Task Force, led by Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, at State House Entebbe. The Task Force briefed the President on the progress made and the preparations underway ahead of the PAMOJA 2027 AFCON tournament.

President Museveni directed the relevant government institutions to accelerate preparations, particularly in the areas of sports infrastructure, training grounds, roads, airport facilities and accommodation in the upcountry host cities. He stressed the importance of timely delivery of the required facilities and infrastructure to ensure that Uganda meets the standards expected of a host nation.

The President also expressed readiness to engage his counterparts in Kenya and Tanzania on the proposed single visa arrangement, which shall facilitate the movement of supporters, visitors, players, officials and other stakeholders across the three East African countries during the tournament.

The hosting of AFCON 2027 represents an important opportunity for East Africa to showcase its potential, unity and capacity to host major international sporting events. The tournament is expected to strengthen regional integration, promote tourism, stimulate trade, investment and create employment opportunities across the East African Community.

For Uganda in particular, co-hosting the tournament shall provide a significant platform to showcase the country’s tourism attractions, culture, hospitality, investment opportunities and sporting talent to millions of visitors and global audiences. This tournament shall contribute to the development and upgrading of sports and related infrastructure, leaving a lasting legacy for Ugandan athletes, communities and the wider economy.

As preparations continue, Uganda’s participation in PAMOJA 2027 reflects the country’s commitment to using sport as a vehicle for regional cooperation, economic diplomacy, tourism promotion and people-to-people engagement, while contributing to the shared East African vision of a more integrated and connected region.
