GUANGDONG, CHINA
The Uganda Embassy in Beijing and the Uganda Consulate General Guangzhou held a Joint Staff Performance Review and Team Building Retreat from 3rd to 8th August 2026 in Nanhai District, Guangdong Province, under the theme, “Strengthening Institutional Collaboration for Effective Economic and Commercial Diplomacy Implementation.” The Retreat brought together officers from both Missions to assess progress in implementing Uganda’s Economic and Commercial Diplomacy Strategy in China, align priorities for the Financial Year 2026/2027 and strengthen coordination under the “One Uganda Mission in China” approach.
In her opening remarks, Amb. Oliver Wonekha, Head of Mission at the Uganda Embassy in Beijing, emphasised the importance of presenting a unified diplomatic front in advancing Uganda’s interests and strengthening relations with the People’s Republic of China. She noted that the Missions’ work is directly linked to the implementation of Uganda’s Fourth National Development Plan and Vision 2040, and called for a concrete and actionable joint work plan.
Ms. Connie Nuwagaba, the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. at the Uganda Consulate Guangzhou, highlighted the Missions’ achievements during the year. She noted that Chinese tourist arrivals to Uganda had more than tripled, while Uganda’s coffee exports to China had almost quadrupled over the past two years, reaching a record 245,533 bags. She attributed the progress to deliberate efforts to position Uganda as a competitive destination for tourism, trade and investment. During the Retreat, the Missions reviewed their Annual Performance for FY 2025/2026 and assessed workplans for FY 2026/2027. Discussions focused on strengthening joint initiatives to promote Uganda’s trade, investment and tourism interests across their respective areas of jurisdiction.
The officers also participated in a team-building programme aimed at enhancing collaboration, communication and institutional cohesion between the two Missions. As part of the Retreat, Mission officials visited selected Chinese enterprises to gain insights into industrial and technological capabilities relevant to Uganda’s development priorities. Particular attention was given to renewable energy, intelligent manufacturing and the low-altitude economy, with discussions exploring opportunities for technology transfer, investment and partnerships.
The Retreat concluded with the two Missions reaffirming their commitment to joint planning, coordinated implementation and stronger institutional collaboration. The engagements are expected to enhance Uganda’s economic and commercial diplomacy in China and strengthen efforts to promote the country as a competitive destination for trade, investment and tourism.
