Entebbe, Uganda – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment and readiness to contain the ongoing Ebola outbreak during a meeting with World Health Organization (WHO) Director General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, at State House Entebbe.

The meeting highlighted Uganda’s robust surveillance, contact tracing, and response mechanisms, which have continued to play a critical role in managing the outbreak. Government also underscored the importance of regional cooperation, particularly with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), to strengthen cross border disease control efforts and prevent further transmission.

As part of a proactive response strategy, Uganda announced plans to support the establishment of treatment and response centres near the Uganda-DRC border to assist affected communities and reduce cross-border movement of patients seeking treatment. The initiative reflects growing confidence in Uganda’s proven capacity to manage public health emergencies.

Dr. Tedros commended Uganda’s decisive leadership, including the difficult decision to suspend this year’s Martyrs Day celebrations to safeguard public health. He further pledged WHO’s continued support to Uganda’s response efforts through technical, logistical, and financial assistance. The engagement reaffirmed the strong partnership between Uganda and the WHO and underscored the country’s continued leadership in advancing regional preparedness and response to public health threats.
