Kampala, Uganda –The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has paid tribute to the vital role of women in shaping Uganda’s diplomatic landscape, by hosting a luncheon to celebrate their contributions at the close of International Women’s Month. Held on March 30, 2026, under the theme “Give to Gain,” the event brought together serving and retired female diplomats, partners, and dignitaries to reflect on leadership, resilience, and the evolving role of women in foreign service. 

Speaking at the gathering, Hon. Henry Okello Oryem emphasised that women remain central to Uganda’s global engagement. He noted that while the Ministry continues to expand its international footprint, the success of its mission is closely tied to the dedication and professionalism of female officers. However, he also acknowledged persistent challenges, urging the institution to prioritise both the career advancement and well-being of women in diplomacy.

The keynote address by Jessica Kayanja highlighted the importance of resilience, emotional intelligence, and intentional living. Drawing from personal experience, she underscored the complexities of balancing diplomatic duties with family life, particularly for officers posted abroad. She stressed that strong relationships require open communication, adaptability, and mutual understanding, especially in the face of prolonged separations. Her remarks resonated with many attendees navigating the dual demands of career and family. 

Adding a reflective perspective, Rtd. Amb. Rosemary Semafumu Mukasa spoke candidly about the realities of diplomatic service. She described career and family as parallel journeys that demand constant alignment and dialogue. Encouraging younger officers, she called for a balance between ambition and flexibility, noting that success in foreign service often comes with personal sacrifice. 

The event also drew several distinguished retired diplomats, including Ambassadors Alexie Kyeyune, Juliet Kalema, Hellen Kayiza, Rosette Nyirikindi, Bernadette Olowo-Freers, Norah Katabarwa and Joyce Onek. Attendees paid tribute to the late Amb. Santa Mary Laker-Kinyera and other departed colleagues, honoring their lasting contributions to Uganda’s diplomatic corps.

As the celebrations concluded, the gathering reinforced a shared commitment to empowering women in diplomacy, recognising their indispensable role in advancing Uganda’s interests on the global stage while shaping a more inclusive and resilient foreign service.
