Gaborone, Botswana – Uganda’s flag flew high as Fadilah Shamika Mohammed Rafi delivered a career-defining performance at the All Africa Senior Badminton Championships in Gaborone, a victory that resonated far beyond the badminton court. In a final that showcased both elite competition and continental camaraderie, the 22-year-old defeated South Africa’s Johanita Scholtz in a gripping three-set women’s singles showdown, 21–17, 16–21, 21–19. The contest was not only a test of endurance and composure, but also a reminder of sport’s power to unite nations through respectful rivalry.
A few years after settling for silver against Scholtz, Shamika returned to the continental stage determined to rewrite her story. She took the opening set with authority but was forced onto the back foot in the second as Scholtz mounted a strong response. In a tense decider, fatigue began to show on both sides of the net. Yet Shamika held her nerve at crucial moments, sealing victory with a display of resilience that embodied the fighting spirit of Ugandan sport. Her triumph secured Uganda’s second gold medal at the championships and made her the first Ugandan woman to win two gold medals at the All Africa Senior Badminton Championships, having previously struck gold in 2023 and claimed a doubles bronze that same year.
Beyond personal glory, the achievement strengthened Uganda’s standing within Africa’s badminton fraternity. Sporting encounters such as these continue to serve as bridges between nations, fostering mutual respect and collaboration while raising the profile of emerging talents across the continent. Shamika’s 2026 campaign delivered another podium finish as she partnered national captain Tracy Naluwooza to secure bronze in the women’s doubles. The duo fell in the semifinals to South Africa’s Amy Ackerman and Scholtz, but their performance contributed valuable points to Uganda’s overall medal tally and reinforced the country’s growing competitiveness.
Uganda fielded a 10-player squad under coach Frank Muwuluzi, with Naluwooza serving as team captain. While several players exited early and travel challenges affected participation in the team events, the team’s presence underscored Uganda’s commitment to continental engagement through sport. Shamika’s golden performance symbolised more than athletic excellence.
