NEW DELHI, INDIA
The Republic of Uganda and the Republic of India celebrated held celebrations on 29 November 2025, to mark 60 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The event took place alongside celebrations to mark Uganda’s 63rd Independence Day. The joint commemoration, organised by the Uganda High Commission in New Delhi, brought together high-level officials, diplomats, development partners, business leaders, and members of the diplomatic community.
The event celebrated the strong friendship and cooperation between Uganda and India including cultural performances, raffle prizes, and a ceremonial cake-cutting. In attendance, Hon. John Mulimba, Uganda’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (Regional Affairs), commended India for its continued support to Uganda’s socioeconomic transformation. He highlighted opportunities for deeper collaboration, calling on Indian investors to expand into key sectors such as manufacturing, agricultural value addition, tourism, and hospitality. He emphasised Uganda’s rich tourism potential, including gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, big five safaris, adventure sports, mountaineering, and religious tourism.
Uganda’s High Commissioner to India, H.E. Prof. Joyce Kakuramatsi Kikafunda, welcomed participants and traced Uganda–India relations back to the early 20th century, noting the contributions of Indians and Persons of Indian Origin to Uganda’s development and independence. She outlined milestones in the six-decade partnership, including India’s support during Uganda’s hosting of major international summits, the establishment of the National Forensic Sciences University Jinja Campus, and cooperation in health, such as cancer treatment and COVID-19 response.
Uganda Airlines reaffirmed its role in enhancing India–Africa connectivity through an interline agreement with Air India, promoting tourism and trade. Representing India, Hon. Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh emphasised the enduring trust and shared aspirations between the two nations. The celebrations concluded with the launch of a publication marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between Uganda and India, underscoring the continued cooperation for sustainable development and growth.
