Kampala, Uganda – On the occasion of the 63rd anniversary of Uganda–China diplomatic relations, the Republic of Uganda reaffirmed its firm commitment to the One-China Principle, which remained a cornerstone of bilateral cooperation and mutual trust between the two nations.

The Government of Uganda recognised the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government representing the whole of China and acknowledged Taiwan as an inalienable part of its territory. Uganda consistently opposed any attempts to undermine China’s sovereignty, including proposals for “two Chinas,” “one China, one Taiwan,” or any form of Taiwan independence. Uganda also did not maintain official or diplomatic relations with Taiwan. “Uganda respected the efforts of the Chinese Government toward the peaceful realisation of national reunification and regarded the Taiwan issue as an internal matter of China,” stated Bagiire Vincent Waiswa, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Over the past six decades, Uganda and China have built a relationship defined by mutual respect, economic collaboration, and shared development priorities. Uganda valued China’s support in areas such as infrastructure development, trade, health, and education. This long-standing partnership reflected a broader commitment to sovereignty, territorial integrity, and consistent diplomatic principles.

As the world navigated an increasingly complex multipolar landscape, Uganda’s position affirmed the importance of a rules-based international order and the need to respect the sovereignty of nations. Upholding the One-China Principle was not only central to Uganda’s bilateral relations with China but also aligned with its broader foreign policy stance rooted in international law and peaceful coexistence.

Through sustained cooperation with China, Uganda remains committed to promoting stability, development, and constructive engagement on the global stage, reinforcing a partnership that continued to support national growth and regional progress.
