Unstoppable She Cranes Soar to Celtic Cup Glory

Uganda’s National Netball Team, the She Cranes, emerged champions of the Celtic Cup in Scotland after defeating Wales in their final round-robin match to complete an unbeaten run and finish with 15 points. They sealed the title on debut with an impressive 70–48 victory.

The She Cranes entered the final match on the brink of glory, riding an unbeaten four-game streak with commanding wins over Namibia (65–38), Northern Ireland (73–46), Scotland (53–51), and Zimbabwe (67–54).

Throughout the tournament, the Uganda High Commission in London played a key role in rallying the diaspora to support the team, not only filling the stands but also offering practical care. Noticing that the players were underdressed for the harsh winter, diaspora members Dr. Manoj Joshi and his wife, Mrs. Bahvna, stepped in with warm clothing, while the High Commission provided hot meals and on-ground support. That spirit of solidarity carried the team through the competition.

The High Commission’s involvement showcased how diplomacy extends far beyond boardrooms, standing firmly with the She Cranes during the five-day event as the team strengthened unity, elevated the national flag, and deepened ties with Ugandans abroad.

In the final match, Uganda delivered a stellar all-round performance. Mary Nuba particularly shone, earning the Lady of the Match award for the second time in the tournament, following her standout display against Scotland.

However, the day’s top honour went to Shadiah Nassanga, who played all but four minutes of the entire tournament to claim the Player of the Tournament accolade.

This victory also lifted Uganda back to a world ranking of number six, securing automatic qualification for the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydney, Australia.
